Anime characters at the Kyoto University of Arts graduation

Anime Artists!
I’ve been writing more about my experiences living in Japan, and I wanted to share one that I thought you might especially enjoy as artists.
One day, my host family in Kyoto surprised me by taking me to the Kyoto City University of Arts graduation, where graduates are allowed to show up dressed as anime, manga, game, and other characters. It was chaotic, creative, and so much fun!
Hatsune Miku was definitely one of the highlights. TBH, I didn’t know half the characters there lol.

My personal favorite was this giant white goat covered in roses. I have no idea what it was from, but I loved it.
There was even a huge cardboard manga panel setup people could pose by.
Not everyone dressed up, of course, and a few of the professors looked pretty nonplussed by the whole thing haha, but for the most part everyone seemed to embrace the fun.
Apparently, the costume tradition became so popular that when administrators tried to restrict it in 2011, there was enough public backlash that the costumes returned the following year, even more creative than before.
I loved getting to meet so many creative artists there, and the whole experience made me want to go to more anime conventions and dress up as characters I create myself.

I have so many weird, fun, and completely unexpected stories from living and traveling in Japan. There was even a time I was hired by a Japanese anime studio to work on animation… but that’s a story for another day!
